Blue Lamp Shades – Try Something Different!
Quality blue lamp shades provide a luxurious, comforting illumination and they are a great alternative to
traditional, run-of-the-mill, white, eggshell, or off-white lamp shades. Anyone can have the plain old look of a
conventional lamp shade, but a blue lamp shade offers a stylish, eye-catching option for your decorating needs.
They are available in all of the various sizes, shapes, and styles as traditional lamp shades.
But they create a starkly different mood and ambiance from the boring, straight-off-the-manufacturer’s-shelf
type of lamp shade. The slightly different illumination from a blue lamp shade is soft and soothing, and it can
blend in with virtually any room decor. Whether it is for a baby’s room, a bedroom, or a living area, a blue lamp
shade’s unique color alone will make you look like a master interior decorator!
The first step is to determine the size of the blue lamp shade you need. Lamp shades are sized according to the
width across the bottom, which is actually referred to as the lamp shade size. They are also measured by the width
across the top, the total height, and the slant, or the height down the side.
If you wish to replace your normal, conservative lamp shade with something more stylish like a blue lamp shade,
you can simply measure the one you already have. Alternatively, if you already have your lamp and just want to draw
attention to it, you can measure the distance from the top of the lamp’s harp to the area just below the socket on
the lamp itself. Just make sure your new blue lamp shade is at least that long in total height.
The other important part of shopping for a lamp shade is to figure out the type of fitting required for your
lamp. There are three basic types of fittings: spider, clip, and uno. The spider is the most common lamp fitting.
There are usually three bars coming together in a ring at the top of the blue lamp shade that will match a spider
fitting.
The spider fitting secures to a harp at the top of the lamp, which is usually two rounded bars extending above
the light bulb. The blue lamp shade is placed on the harp and a fitting is screwed on to hold it in place. Larger
table lamps usually have a spider fitting.
A clip fitting simply uses a clip to attach the blue lamp shade directly to the light bulb, with no other
hardware attachments. Many small table lamps use a clip fitting.
Finally, an uno fitting is also sometimes used on smaller table lamps, but can often be found on antique floor
lamps, too. The uno has a wire fitting that is permanently attached to the shade and the shade attaches directly to
the lamp socket.
Virtually all lamps can accommodate a different size and style lamp shade than the one that came with the lamp
when it was purchased. Sellers of lamps rarely use any creativity in choosing lamp shades. Your only limit is your
imagination in transforming a lamp from something no one notices into a chic, original piece of furniture.
